Natural Expressions:

Paintings by Diane Shaw & Ceramics by David McBeth

The Ice House Gallery will feature works by University of Tennessee-Martin Department of Visual and Theatre Arts faculty Diane Shaw and David McBeth January 29 - February 28.   The exhibit explores nature’s forms and colors in Ms. Shaw’s landscapes and Mr. McBeth’s pottery.

Each of the paintings in Ms Shaw’s collection is expressive, using pure color and rubbed textures to capture an imaginary natural setting that emerges from the process of the work and not from any pre-conceived design.  Using brushes, rags, paper towels, paint scrapers and fingers, she applies acrylic paint directly from the tube onto paper and canvas.   She layers and glazes to achieve desired effects with any mixing of color coming from the interaction of the paint on the surface.   Ms. Shaw, an Assistant Professor of Art, states, “My work strives for a purity of artistic application and medium that is a replication of the way in which I view nature’s purity of form.”

Mr. McBeth, a Professor of Art who has taught drawing, art history, ceramics, sculpture and 3-D design, is a practicing artist producing pottery that is in private and public collections in twelve countries.  He keeps a summer studio on the coast of Maine and exhibits across the country.  Mr. McBeth demonstrates pottery in numerous traditional skills festivals in the region and encourages his students to do the same. His broad, open-formed bowls with their graceful edges are meant to express generosity and gentleness, while his installation pieces celebrate the handmade cup.

Shop the Guild for your Valentine!

Don’t forget to pick up a card or gift for your Valentine. Stardust Glass Studios has brought in new handmade glass pendants and earrings. There is sterling jewelry from the studios of Beverly Kietzke and Mary Helen Taylor. Gifts for the men on your list include marbles and paperweights, hand carved wildlife calls and hand knit “man pouches.”

It is going to be cold for a while longer, so liven up the dreary days with a colorful hand knit scarf or hat. Keep your toes toasty with felted slippers and a hand woven rug.

The Ice House gift shop has never had so much to choose from, and we now accept Visa and Master Card. There is definitely something for everyone and in every price range. All items at the Guild are crafted by local artists, and the small commission from sales benefits the Guild’s educational programs.
